Stay

He says, “Stay friends,”
but what he really means is,

“Stay.”

And so you do.

And so you try to hold
his pride in your hand
with your heart in the other,
but soon you find
you have room for
only one.

And so when your hands overflow
and you let him fall to the ground,
you pause before bending over.

‘Cause with his face on the floor
and with your hands full to the brim,
he learns how to pick himself up.

But once you’ve chosen yourself
and he sees you from ground up,
watch how quickly he tells you,

“Go.”

Hi, I’m Emily and I like to think of myself as a kaleidoscope, but one that ranges from a spectrum of commitment issues to emotional hoarding, all circling around varying shades of anxiety. People say I have trouble ‘staying present’ and I’ve found that daydreaming becomes significantly less acceptable in your 20’s.
