Girl on Fire

People tell me not to give in
but I can’t help myself.

I would set myself on fire
just to keep you warm.

Better you than me,
better you warm and snug
than me

too close.

The smoke burns our eyes
but better burnt
than too clear.

‘Cause as my flesh burns,
so do my questions
of how we got here.

They tell me I’ll wear myself thin
but I say better thin
than full of doubt.

I’m not quite ready to deal with doubt

so I’ll set myself on fire
and you’ll say
I give too much,

never realizing
how long I’ve kept you
in this burning house.

Hi, I’m Emily and I like to think of myself as a kaleidoscope, but one that ranges from a spectrum of commitment issues to emotional hoarding, all circling around varying shades of anxiety. People say I have trouble ‘staying present’ and I’ve found that daydreaming becomes significantly less acceptable in your 20’s.
