Veil

Lift the veil
on your lies
and you’ll find
you’re not alone
under there.

Exposure
to the sun
is only daunting
when you’re used
to shielding
your eyes,

but it’s never
just eyes you shield.

You hide
your shame
while your friends
hide theirs
and you wonder
why you’re always
spitting glass.
Can’t you see,
this world is always
sharp corners
when you keep
those soft edges
hidden?

You can stay
beneath the veil,

keep
that smile
pinned
to your face
and
your truth
nailed
to your chest,

it’ll keep
that veil
safely
in place.

But then
one day,
you’ll lift the veil
on your lies
and you’ll find
how much time
you have
wasted
under there.

Hi, I’m Emily and I like to think of myself as a kaleidoscope, but one that ranges from a spectrum of commitment issues to emotional hoarding, all circling around varying shades of anxiety. People say I have trouble ‘staying present’ and I’ve found that daydreaming becomes significantly less acceptable in your 20’s.
