Have you ever spun round
circles large enough
that you forget that
you’re bored?

Have you ever been stuck
in a kaleidoscope
so bright you forget that
you’ve seen it all before?

Haven’t you gotten sick of
watching people climb mountains
while you crawl up boys’ legs,
watching them soar
while you hop
from one
temporary high
to the next,

never really ever leaving
this small town?

I think you like it here,
in this kaleidoscope,
you like being able to touch the walls,
know the full limits of
your space.

Because if you leave,
what would have been the point
of remembering names,
of making memories,
of crying out

Where would you go from here?

Hi, I’m Emily and I like to think of myself as a kaleidoscope, but one that ranges from a spectrum of commitment issues to emotional hoarding, all circling around varying shades of anxiety. People say I have trouble ‘staying present’ and I’ve found that daydreaming becomes significantly less acceptable in your 20’s.
